New Schools for New Orleans is a nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving excellent public schools for every child in New Orleans. Founded in April 2006, NSNO hopes to build a system of schools, not a school system, by encouraging the schools to determine their individual and collective needs and by supporting them in their growth toward operational excellence and academic rigor. To facilitate change and work towards our vision, NSNO concentrates its work in the three key areas we believe will lead to dramatic gains in student achievement::

Exceptional Human Capital

• NSNO works with teachNOLA, the New Orleans-focused initiative of The New Teacher Project, to offer opportunities for talented individuals to teach in charter schools.
• NSNO subsidizes half of New Leaders for New Schools resident's salaries for leaders placed in charter schools.

High-Performing Schools

• In addition to incubating new schools with an intense training year, NSNO continues to provide leadership, organizational, operational support as well as recruiting and hiring support.  Moreover, we provide start-up leadership with curriculum and culture coaching.
• NSNO subsidizes data-driven instructional practices from proven operators The Achievement Network and the STEP program.
• NSNO supports effective governance practices by offering resources and training, and funding the launch of The High Bar in New Orleans.
• NSNO helps schools and charter management organizations scale up operations.
• NSNO supports charter boards seeking new leadership or management, and boards that make the difficult decision to shut down underperforming charters.

Reform-Driven Environment

• NSNO helps to identify needs and connect providers with practitioners to fill gaps in effective reform.
• NSNO collaborates with partners to promote excellent public schools for all.
• NSNO subsidizes policy work at the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools.
