NSNO’s mission is to deliver on the promise of an excellent public school for every child – including those with disabilities, multilingual learners, those who have suffered through trauma, and others who require supports and services to be successful in the classroom. Below are spotlights where NSNO, schools, and community partners are collaborating and innovating to expand access to robust learning environments and supports for all students.
Students with Disabilities
New Orleans schools serve students with a range of exceptionalities, including those with low-incidence disabilities who require specialized supports and services. NSNO advocates for a fair funding formula so schools have the resources they need to provide robust services and programs to these students. Learn more about these programs here.
Mental Health
It is estimated that 4 in 10 New Orleans students are concerned about their mental health and its impact on their academic success. We know schools are striving to meet those needs, including improving how they leverage Medicaid to cover more services. Additionally, partners like the Center for Restorative Approaches are implementing citywide initiatives to prevent gun violence and keep our students safe.
Multilingual Learners
Nearly 1 in 10 New Orleans students are learning English in our schools today. They and their families require additional supports to be successful in the classroom. NSNO is excited to develop a collaborative strategy with schools to improve multilingual learner outcomes.
Preparing for Lifelong Success
More New Orleans youth are graduating with credentials that prepare them for college and their careers. Schools partner with providers like the New Orleans Career Center (NOCC) to expand access to career-connected learning opportunities so students are prepared to advance in high-wage, high-growth careers.
